A friend of mine wanted to set up a P133 he had lying around to stream
audio coming in off a phone line attached to a voice modem. A caller would
be immediately connected to the system, immediately broadcasting on the
internet.
He would then distribute flyers in the stranger parts of the city in order
to get the fringe people to participate.
He wasn't going to touch the server after that. Just listen to it.
The main advantage of this over something like live365.com was that even
poor people (including the homeless) could broadcast, even if they
couldn't listen to it. It was also anonymous at the cost of a quarter for
a payphone.
Not that he was a saint. He made an excellent point that rich people would
listen to it as a chance to "slum it" with the full mental condom of the
Internet. The karmic joke of this alone would be worth it.
The main disadvantage would be liability. But he didn't care. He didn't
have a lot of assets to lien. Just a ratty ol' P133 and some underwear.
