Lots of money can buy happiness, British study finds
London, Jan 8 AP
However, requires about 1 million pounds
The old adage that money cannot buy happiness is wrong - but you need a lot
of it to be euphoric, according to research published Tuesday.
As far as age is concerned, the decade-long study of 9,000 families in Britain
found happiness follows a U-shaped pattern. People start life happy but drift
into discontent in their early 30s, before their happiness recovers and
continues increasing into their 60s.
When it comes to money, receiving a windfall of just STG1,000 ($NZ3403)
can improve someone's outlook on life, the University of Warwick researchers
found. In fact, those who won lotteries or inherited money saw their happiness
and psychological health improve.
However, to "turn an average person into a very happy one" takes around
STG1million pounds, the researchers said.
Still, those with modest means should not despair - a stable marriage and
good health still make people happy, the study found.
