I was just talking to friends about the prospect of politicians having
weblogs at the bar tonight. I snorted and said it would be years ... if
ever. Apparently I was greatly mistaken.

Bruce asked what kind of non-violent cause or causes might unite America
and why Democrats have not proposed it. I can suggest at least three:
homeland security, energy security, and national productivity. Americans
should be enlisted in an urgent national effort to secure our
neighborhoods against terrorist attacks. We can volunteer for training
in emergency medical response in case of mass casualties and assume
auxiliary police and fire duties. Our people would also rally around a
national project to make us sufficiently energy efficient that no
American need die for foreign oil in the future. And we can all
participate in shifting our economy from one of consumption to one of
saving, investment, and productivity.
Chuck Karczag questioned my proposal for an international peace-making
force. Under the UN or a future UN Plus, this force, composed of
contributing forces from participating nations, would stop hostilities
in volatile regions or act to protect civilians in conflict
environments. Diplomats and peace-keepers could then move in to
adjudicate resolution of the conflict. Without some
democratically-controlled international capability of this sort, the US
will continue to be tempted to go it alone, as in Panama, or with
"coalitions of the willing" as in Iraq, or do nothing as in Rwanda. I
welcome a dialogue with Chuck and others on this, since it needs to be
further thought through. I understand the complexity of the proposal and
can think of a number of questions myself, but let me know a better
alternative.
To Mary I would say that I understand the nature of a national campaign
better than most, having helped others run for President and having done
so myself. It is perhaps the most daunting physical and emotional
undertakings one can imagine, especially if you do not have a large paid
staff and lots of money. But it is also the only real platform to
challenge Americans to make the country and the world better. The
Democratic party has not offered a great idea for more than a quarter
century and we risk permanent minority status because of it. The foreign
policy I've proposed, Principled Engagement, calls on our nation to live
up to its highest ideals at home and in dealing with the peoples of the
world. I believe the vast majority of Americans will respond to great
challenges and that's why I need your help in offering them.
