[wordup] Wiki - News Cooperation

This is really cool. I'm excited to see wiki spread into new uses.
I've also been looking for a good generic source for world news ... so
this may be an interesting alternative.

Adam.

Hi,

Wikipedia has recently reached an agreement with the EU-related news
site EUobserver.com:

http://www.euobserver.com/

Under the agreement, all the news summaries (shown on the EUobserver
frontpage) published since Sept. 29 are put in the public domain (!),
and in return, Wikipedia makes a good faith effort to add these
summaries to its "Current events" page, linking to EUobserver as a
source.

Wikipedia's "Current events" is quickly developing into a decent open
content resource for anyone who wants to see what's happening around the
world. It's an interesting proof of concept for "wiki news" and might
develop into a separate spin-off site, or into a larger section within
Wikipedia proper (the latter being my personal preference). In any case,
the current format is a little too unstructured, so we'll probably add
some categories to the page.

Wikipedia's "Current events" can be found here:

http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Current_events

The agreement itself is described here:

http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:EUobserver_cooperation

This is a good thing, because it reduces duplicate effort and increases
the amount of open (free) content out there. The agreement is beneficial
to both parties -- EUobserver gets a steady stream of visitors from
Wikipedia, and we get news for free. It is also an interesting
collaboration between more traditional journalism and the largely
anarchistic world of wikis. Finally, I'm happy that this will increase
the attention given to European-level politics, mostly ignored by
traditional media.

If anyone on the list has ideas for other, similar cooperations that
could be established, let me know. Wikipedia always needs neutrally
written material on every conceivable subject. The best thing you can do
is put your material under a Wikipedia-compatible open content license
-- preferably the GNU Free Documentation License -- and let us know
about it.

Regards,

Erik Moeller
